First Trimester Highlights

The first trimester of pregnancy is week 1 through week 12, or about 3 months.

Jay and Piya decided to wait until atleast 20 weeks to let their good friends know. But, Piya and Jay let their parents and siblings know of this great news. The reactions from Piya's parents (dad especially) were splendid. Her dad was literally singing and dancing. "Thanks to faceTime", she said.
Her sister and sister-in-law's reactions were cute and funny too.  Piya's grandmother was super forward-thinking and she was excited and in fact she may have been the only one to not have had even a bit of a preference for either a boy or a girl baby!

Few of the dialogue exchanges below--

Mom -- Aaaaaa.. kannu kutti pattu kutti..  (translate: words used to pamper a baby, but addressed to me;) Ofcourse Piya is still a baby to her)

Dad -- Great Great.. this is enough for my health issues to disappear (dances and sings), I'm gonna have a grandson or a granddaughter :)

Sis -- Hey, you calling at this time of the day? Are you pregnant?
(Piya then twists the conversation to distract the sister and few minutes later, Piya says in a soft-funny-shy voice "Yes, I'm pregnant".
Sis -- What, Ok.. now I don't know if you're kidding. Come on ;)

Mom-in-law -- Very good..very good.. congratulations .. (and at once tells her dad the news in the background)

Dad-in-law -- What a relief, people kept asking me when I was gonna be a grandfather and finally I have an answer.. great!

Sis-in-law -- What? You guys gonna give Jill a company, wow that's so nice. So you're adopting a puppy? :)

Well-wisher -- "Great news, congratulations. Jill is going to be jealous now"

Now, Jay usually is a pretty private person.  Jay surprised Piya by expressing a lot more happiness than she expected. In fact, he even spread the news to a few well-wishers at work which was so not Jay. He seemed pretty thrilled. But, most of the first trimester went by just hoping they cross the most risky phase successfully. Piya was pretty careful about the little things, even though they may have had no impact on the pregnancy.

Morning sickness --

Ofcourse, what's having a baby without hints of morning sickness. Piya felt pretty nauseous from week 6 to week 13 at certain times of the day, especially when she was really hungry. Salt and spice consumption went to a bare minimum in her cooking to help with nausea and she did not crave for any kind of food. But, fruits seemed to work slightly better for her. Poor hubby had to eat the salt-less, spice-less food as well. Piya used to crave for different vegetarian cuisines before pregnancy and she expected that to increase when one gets pregnant. But, oh well..that wasn't the case. She later learnt that it "may" kick in during the 2nd trimester.

Got to mention, Jill was always a great company when morning sickness hit her during the odd hours. She would always wake up for Piya and be close to her at all times to comfort her, when Jay was at work or is sleeping sound ;)

A little road trip -- Inspite of all the scary articles Piya read through about being very careful in the first few weeks of pregnancy, Jay and Piya had a wedding to attend in Michigan. It was one of her good friend's wedding and though she wanted to be careful herself, she did not want to miss the wedding as well. She kind of craved for "good company", "rich Indian traditions" and "those beautiful silk sarees".  She was excited to dress up and eat up! Jay, Piya and Jill took a little road trip and the occasion was pretty joyous, except Piya fell kind of sick on her way back. Not sure what the trigger was though -- it could have been the weather or the food. Then, she realized when one gets pregnant, "her immunity" is passed on to the baby and the mother is pretty vulnerable to all the germs and infections. Lesson learnt. Luckily, her husband took good care of her and she recovered fairly quickly, but she hardly ate anything during that time.

The doctor visits were almost once a month and everything seemed to be good. As a vegetarian, Piya was asked to figure out the required protein intake somehow and to be well hydrated. Yes, "hydration" is certainly the key.

Tip:

Feeling nauseous? It's hard, but it's the best reassurance that the baby is doing good.
Drink cold water rather than regular to help with nausea. It helped Piya big time.
Avoid caffeine not only because of the quantity of caffeine that can have adverse effects on pregnancy, but cutting caffeine down helps alleviate morning sickness. Reduce the use of tomatoes, onions and citrusy food at night especially.
Don't miss your daily walk -- at least for 15 mins please.
